Track shoes, sometimes called grousers or grouser shoes, are plates attached to the tracks of heavy equipment like excavators, bulldozers and loaders. These plates provide the machine with the traction it needs to operate effectively on various surfaces. The key components of a track shoe include the shoe plate, bolts that fasten it to the steel crawler belt and raised ridges on the shoe that dig into the ground to give the machine grip.

Improved Traction: Track shoes improve traction on a variety of surfaces, including mud, gravel and rocky ground. The grousers dig into the earth, helping the machine avoid slippage and making it easier to operate in challenging environments.
Smoother Turning Capabilities: Double grousers can particularly help the machine make smoother turns on different terrain types.
Even Weight Distribution: The design of track shoes allows for the even distribution of the machine’s weight across the surface. This is especially important on soft ground, where concentrated weight could cause the machine to sink.
Protection for Tracks and Other Components: Track shoes serve as the first point of contact with the ground, which means they take the majority of the wear and tear that would otherwise affect the tracks. This helps prolong the life of the entire undercarriage, saving you money on costly repairs or replacements.
Single Ridge Shoes:
Single grousers have one raised ridge or bar and are commonly used in dozers and excavators when operating on hard or compact surfaces. They offer strong traction and are good for pushing or pulling heavy loads.
Double Ridge Shoes:
These shoes have two ridges and provide good traction while allowing for smoother turns and better handling. Double grousers are typically used on excavators working on a mix of terrain types.
Triple Ridge Shoes:
Triple grousers have three ridges and offer a balance between traction and smooth movement. They are commonly used on excavators that need to operate on soft to medium-hard ground, providing stability without excessive ground disturbance.
Excavator track shoes are used in the construction industry to build infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and highways. The excavator uses the track shoes to level the ground, dig, and make trenches.
Excavator track shoes are used as a mining machine. The track shoes can mine in places with rough terrain and high friction, like ore and coal mines, for stability and great digging power.
Excavator track shoes can be found in demolishing machines. They help demolish old buildings and infrastructures, including those made with concrete, steel, and bricks.
Excavators with track shoes can help in the landscaping of large outdoor spaces, such as public gardens, theme parks, and hotel courtyards. They can help with the creation of landscape models, the construction of water bodies, and the laying of hardscapes.
Excavator track shoes can also be used in agriculture, where the excavator helps with soil preparation, irrigation system establishment, drainage ditch excavation, and fertilizer and pesticide transportation and distribution.
Excavators with track shoes can be used in forestry to carry out tree felling, forest clearance, drainage ditch excavation, and transportation of timber and other materials.
Excavators with track shoes can be used in some specialized industries for particular deep-earth mining, off-shore oil rigs, and other specialized industry operations.
Increase ground contact area
Track shoes evenly distribute the weight of the excavator over a larger area of the ground, effectively reducing the unit ground pressure and preventing the equipment from sinking into soft ground.
Provide grip
The track shoe pattern design provides additional grip to ensure the stability of the equipment on slippery, rugged or steep terrain.
Power transmission
The track shoe transmits the power of the engine to the ground through the cooperation of the chain and the drive wheel, pushing the excavator forward or turning.
Protect the ground and equipment
High-quality track shoes not only protect the track chain and drive device, but also reduce damage to the ground, especially when working in sensitive areas.

Track shoe body: Usually cast from steel, is the main part of the Track shoe, and carries the load of the excavator.
Internal and external ribs: The internal and external ribs are the supporting frame structure of the Track shoe, which increases the strength and stability of the Track shoe and ensures that the Track shoe can still maintain good working performance under high loads.
Roller Path: Made of quenched high-carbon alloy steel (hardness HRC58-62), responsible for dispersing equipment weight and ground impact.
Bushings and pins: Bushings and pins are used to connect the Track shoe and other parts of the track, providing flexible rotation and wear resistance.
Bolt assembly: 12.9 grade high-strength bolts with self-locking nuts, preload must reach 850N·m±5%
Engineering mechanics design principles
Three-point support theory: Reduce the ground pressure by 30-50% through double/triple rib structure (mathematical model: P=W/(n×L×B)).
Dynamic load compensation: The arc bottom design increases the impact load attenuation rate by 40%.
Anti-derailment mechanism: The lateral guide rail inclination is controlled at 15°±1°, and the contact area is increased by 25%.
Impact resistance: The Track shoe needs to have sufficient impact resistance to cope with rough working environments.
Tools Required
You’ll need a wrench set, jack stands and possibly a hydraulic jack to raise the machine. Make sure you also have the correct replacement bolts and washers.
Safety Precautions
Before beginning any work, make sure the machine is securely lifted and stabilized. Never work under an unsupported machine and always follow proper lockout/tagout procedures.
Installation Process
Begin by aligning the shoe plate with the track’s mounting holes. Insert and tighten the bolts, being careful not to overtighten, as this can lead to stripped threads or cracking in the shoe plate.
Removal Process
Loosen the bolts carefully to avoid damaging the threads. If the shoes are worn or damaged, inspect the track links for wear and replace any bolts that show signs of damage.
Visual Inspection: Conduct daily or weekly inspections to identify cracks, breaks, or deformation in the track shoes. Check for missing or loose bolts, misalignment, and abnormal wear patterns. Early detection prevents costly damage to the entire undercarriage.
Cleaning the Track Shoes: Remove accumulated mud, rocks, and debris using a pressure washer or brush. Pay special attention to the area between the shoes and around the rollers and sprockets. Regular cleaning prevents corrosion and reduces stress on moving parts.
Lubrication: Lubricate pivot points, bushings, and bearings according to the manufacturer’s schedule. Use high-quality, weather-resistant grease, especially in dusty, wet, or extreme temperature conditions. Proper lubrication minimizes friction and internal wear.
Tighten Loose Bolts: Inspect and tighten all bolts securing the track shoes and undercarriage components. Apply thread-locking compounds or bolt lubricants to prevent loosening due to vibration and ensure consistent torque retention.
Use Track Shoe Lubricants: For high-load applications, consider installing automatic lube tracks or applying specialized track lubricants. These reduce metal-to-metal contact, lower operating temperatures, and significantly extend component life.
Alignment and Tension Adjustment: Ensure track shoes are properly aligned and tensioned as per the manufacturer’s specifications. Improper tension—too tight or too loose—leads to accelerated wear, poor tracking, and increased fuel consumption. Adjust regularly, especially after new shoe installation or heavy use.
