Dragline bucket chains are specialized, high-strength, wear-resistant chains used to drag and fill the buckets of large dragline excavators. They act as the "power transmission belt" that transmits the tremendous pulling force of the winch to the bucket, enabling it to penetrate and dig into the material. They are crucial heavy-duty components that ensure the efficient operation of such a massive piece of equipment. Their design, manufacture, and maintenance represent the highest level of industrial expertise.

The meshing area is susceptible to wear due to long-term tensile loads and material friction. Some patented chains (such as a certain invention patent) feature raised ribs in the meshing area. These serve as wear indicators (allowing wear levels to be observed without tools) and also increase the load-bearing surface area by over 15%, slowing the wear rate.
In heavy-duty applications such as open-pit mines, chains must withstand the weight of the bucket and the impact of the material. For example, the denser protection chain features a square-section design. The increased density enhances cut and puncture resistance, and the main section offers excellent high-temperature resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments such as steel mills and landfills.
In dragline excavation, a chain connects the bucket to the slewing mechanism. A cable pulls the bucket along the ground, completing the "backward and downward" dragline operation. For example, the chain of the Bucyrus 8750-65 dragline must withstand a power output of 37,300 kW to ensure an annual stripping capacity of 42 million cubic meters.
Chain length limits the bucket's swing range, typically keeping positioning accuracy within ±15cm, meeting the demands of operations such as deep foundation pits and river desilting.
On slippery or muddy roads, the synergistic effect of the chain and tire significantly improves grip.
Drag chain:
The main chain connecting the tow rope and bucket, bearing the primary tensile force. The above types are primarily designed for this type of chain.
Lift chain:
In some designs, a shorter chain may be used to connect the hoist rope and bucket, but this chain experiences far less friction and wear than the drag chain, placing greater emphasis on pure tensile force.
Suspension chain:
The chain used to suspend the bucket from the truss, primarily bearing static and dynamic gravity loads.
Stripping in Open-Pit Mines
Large draglines (such as walking-type equipment with a bucket capacity of 168 m³) use high-strength chains, combined with a transport-free dumping process, can reduce unit costs by 8%-10% and increase annual production by 12%-15%.
Underwater and Deep Foundation Construction
Chains for river dredging and port construction require corrosion resistance. For example, anti-slip, dual-wear-resistant chains made from a patented alloy are both anti-slip and wear-resistant, making them suitable for use in conditions prone to vehicle entrapment, such as quicksand and silty soils.
Extreme Environment Operations
Enhanced protective chains feature a square-section main section with high density and high temperature resistance, making them suitable for impacts from hot slag in steel mills or sharp objects in landfills.
Throwing the Bucket: The operator drops the massive bucket, suspended by a hoist rope, onto a distant material pile.
Dragging the Bucket: This is where the chain plays its primary role. A massive drag winch begins retrieving the drag rope, which is connected to this massive chain via a pulley system. The chain transmits tremendous tension to the bucket, forcing it to dig into the material and fill it. This process is like dragging a basket through a pile of sand with a chain.
Lifting and Rotating: Once the bucket is full, the hoist rope and drag rope work together to lift the heavy bucket off the ground. The entire upper platform rotates back to the discharge point (such as a dump or crusher).
Discharging: Upon reaching the discharge point, the drag winch is appropriately released, and the bucket tilts forward under its center of gravity, allowing the material to be discharged by gravity. The chain may be subject to impact forces at this point.

Regular Lubrication
Use MAC620 heavy-duty extreme pressure grease, which operates in a temperature range of -20°C to 180°C, can withstand 60 MPa extreme pressure loads, and reduces pin wear by 42%.
Wear Monitoring
Prevent chain breakage by using the chain's built-in wear indicator or regularly measuring link elongation (replace if chain elongation exceeds 2%).
Tension Adjustment
Use a screw tensioner or quick-lock device to ensure a secure fit between the chain and the tire to prevent it from falling off during operation. For example, mining shovel chains require chain tensioning every 800 hours to maintain optimal grip.
